Introduction to Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that focuses on removing excess skin and fat from the eyelids. The skin around the eyes is some of the most sensitive and thinnest skin on our body, which means it ages the fastest. Drooping eyelids, puffy undereye bags, and dark circles are common symptoms of just living life, but they can make us look older and more tired than we feel. Eyelid surgery is a highly popular surgery that helps relieve these symptoms and restores a youthful appearance. If you are interested in eyelid surgery in New York City, consider scheduling a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons at our Medique practice in the West Village. A light-skinned woman with shoulder-length brown hair looks at her reflection in a mirror, gently touching her face with both hands. She wears a light-colored tank top and has a neutral expression, her gaze meeting the camera through the mirror. The softly lit background, likely a bathroom or vanity area, is out of focus, emphasizing the intimate, skincare-focused moment. - Eyelid Surgery in New York, NY

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, tightens the area around the eyelids. When it is done on the upper eyelid, it is called upper blepharoplasty, whereas lower eyelid surgery is called lower blepharoplasty. These procedures target undereye bags, drooping eyelids, and puffiness around the eyes. Eyelid surgery is commonly combined with a facelift and brow lift to rejuvenate the upper face.

  • Upper blepharoplasty addresses excess fat and drooping skin in the upper eyelid area. A drooping eyelid can often lead to a tired and angry look when it is not the case. This procedure removes the excess skin and restores a fresher look.

  • Lower blepharoplasty addresses excess fat, skin, and baggy eyes in the lower eyelid area. These features can cause someone to look aged and exhausted. This procedure excises unwanted skin and enhances the upper facial appearance.

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting eyelid surgery in New York City at Medique is to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During your appointment, your surgeon will ask you about your medical history, your aesthetic and/or functional goals, and any concerns and expectations you have from a blepharoplasty procedure. They will also examine your target areas, recommend the appropriate technique for your condition, and discuss any risks and benefits of the procedure to help align your expectations.

Once you both agree to proceed with the procedure, they will create a surgical plan for you, which you can then take to the concierge for pricing and scheduling. The patient concierge will also provide you with some pre-operative instructions to follow.

What to Expect on the Day of Eyelid Surgery

On the day of your eyelid surgery in New York City, your surgeon and their staff will welcome you to the state-of-the-art practice at Medique, get you settled in the surgical suite, and review our surgical plan. Once you are ready, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer the type of anesthesia most suitable for you. Upper blepharoplasty can be performed with just local anesthesia, whereas lower blepharoplasty may require sedation in addition to local anesthesia or sometimes even general anesthesia because the incision in this case can be painful for the patient.

Upper blepharoplasty is usually performed through incisions that follow the natural lines of your eyelids, in the creases of your upper lids. Through these incisions, your surgeon will access the underlying tissue and excise excess skin, fat, and sometimes even muscle. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures. Upper blepharoplasty usually takes 1 to 2 hours to perform.

Lower blepharoplasty is generally performed through an incision just below the lash line, allowing for the removal of loose and excess skin. If no skin needs to be excised, the incision is made inside the lower eyelid, and there are no visible scars. In all cases, the surgeon then removes excess fat from the eyelid bags or repositions it to create a smooth and more youthful lower eyelid and cheek.

Lower blepharoplasty surgery can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of your case and the surgeon’s speed.

After your eyelid surgery, you will be monitored by staff in the recovery room until sedation wears off. Patients are recommended to ask a friend or family member to drive them home.

Bruising, swelling, and tightness are common after eyelid surgery and peak after a few days, only to dissipate within the next few days. Patients can use cold compresses and pain medication to alleviate these symptoms. Furthermore, it is recommended that they elevate their heads during sleep.

Patients can resume normal activities after 3-5 days, but they should avoid strenuous activities for up to three weeks after surgery.
